Is there a relationship between the mass of a SMBH and the kinetic energy of its host elliptical galaxy? Abstract We use a restricted sample of elliptical galaxies, whose kinematical parameters inside the semimajor axis were calculated correcting the effect of the integration of the light along the line of sight, in order to analyze a possible relationship between the mass of a Supermassive Black Hole (SMBH) and the kinetic energy of random motions in the host galaxy. We find M BH ∝ (M G σ 2) α with 0.87 ≤ α ≤ 1 depending on the different fitting methods and samples used. This result could be interpreted as a new fundamental relationship or as a new way to explain the old M BH − σ law. In fact, the relations of the velocity dispersion both with the mass of the SMBH (M BH ∝ σ 4.12) and with the mass of the host galaxy (M G ∝ σ 2.16) induce us to infer an almost direct proportionality: M BH ∝ M G σ 2. A similar relationship is found for the total kinetic energy involving the rotation velocity too.

Supermassive Black Hole Mass Regulated by Host Galaxy Morphology

We investigated the relationship between supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass and host starburst luminosity in Seyfert galaxies and Palomar-Green QSOs, focusing on the host galaxy morphology. Host starburst luminosity was derived from the 11.3 μm polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon luminosity. We found that the SMBH masses of elliptical-dominated host galaxies are more massive than those of disk-dom...

Feedback from central black holes in elliptical galaxies . II : Can purely mechanical energy feedback models work ?

By using high-resolution 1D hydrodynamical simulations, we investigate the effects of purely mechanical feedback from super massive black holes (SMBHs) in the evolution of elliptical galaxies for a broad range of feedback efficiencies and compare the results to four major observational constraints. In particular, we focus on 1) the central black hole to stellar mass ratio of the host galaxy, 2)...

Grand Unification II: Hot Accretion and AGN Jets

We show that a quasi-spherical (QS) hot accretion flow is expected to operate in all SMBHs, with its rate being capped at ṁQS,max ∼ 0.001(M/10 M⊙) in units of the Eddington rate. It is then proposed that AGN jet power is proportional to the product of the hot accretion rate and a SMBH spin-dependent efficiency for energy extraction in the form of jets. Predictions from this model include (1) wh...

Two-phase model for black hole feeding and feedback

We study effects of active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback outflows on multiphase inter stellar medium (ISM) of the host galaxy. We argue that supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth is dominated by accretion of dense cold clumps and filaments. AGN feedback outflows overtake the cold medium, compress it, and trigger a powerful starburst – a positive AGN feedback. This predicts a statistical corre...

A Relation between Supermassive Black Hole Mass and Quasar Metallicity?

We analyze spectra for a large sample of 578 Active Galactic Nuclei to examine the relationships between broad emission line properties and central supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass. We estimate SMBH masses by applying the virial theorem to the C IV λ1549 broad emission line. Although the FWHMs of C IV and Hβ appear nearly unrelated in individual objects, these FWHMs are well correlated when ...
